What does that mean as far as how close? For example, if I see a car coming in the lane next to me that appears to be a distance away, it's actually closer, right? But if the car is closer right in my mirror about to enter my blind spot, then it's not closer than it appears in my mirror, right?
So, is it safe to make a lane change in front of a car I see in my driver's side mirror as long I have space, time, and my speed is close to their speed? When I make a lane change in front of another car I see directly (close) in my mirror, how many feet am I giving them? Do you think it's safe or would you make a lane change like this (even in heavy traffic)? Some drivers may think of these type of lane changes as aggressive driving and may call me an idiot.
In my opinion as far as cutting another car off, if another car has to really slow down because I moved in the lane in front of them, then I consider that as a cut off. But as long my speed is close to their speed and they don't have to adjust their speed, then I don't consider that as a cut off. Basically, if I see a car coming faster then me, I'll let it pass by first before changing lanes. If I see a car that is slowly creeping along in the left lane on the interstate and I'm in the right lane creeping up on slower moving traffic, I'll signal and move in front of the car in the left lane. I hate it when people stay in the left lane while not passing and they sit there attempting to pass me for mile upon mile. Those are the type of drivers I normally move in front of if I creep up on slower moving traffic in the right lane. If drivers don't want to speed up (or speed 15 over the limit) to pass me, then they need to get in the right lane behind me, what do you think? And I sometimes see long lines of cars in the left lane because of this.

For starters that statement is on the Passengers side mirror ... Not the drivers side mirror.
The reason that is printed on the passenger side mirror is because in order to provide a wider field of view on the passengers side they install a mirror which is slightly convex which does expand the area of view but at the cost of making everything seen in the mirror seem smaller and therefore farther away - hence the warning!
Cutting someone off generally denotes pulling in less than one vehicle length ****************************************?br>
The length of the vehicle you are passing that is --- not your own vehicles length !!!!! In front of the other vehicle...
Therefore as long as a full car length remains between the rear of your car and the front of the car you are passing, or the length of the truck behind your car before pulling in front of a truck then you are driving properly.
If the front of a car fills either side mirror - it is too close to pull in front of... you should be able to see both headlights of a car in the lane to the right of you, or one headlight of a car in the lane to the left of you, in your inside mirror, or see a full paint stripe visible between the back of your car and the front of the car behind you in your outside mirror and a minimum of 2 full stripes for trucks, before moving to the other lane.

You should go to your local drivers licencense renewal office and ask for one of those driving books. They are usually about $1. It will answer all of that plus more.
Do not just rely on your mirrors. You must do head checks as well or you will not be able to see in your blind spot. You will get used to this mirror after a while. I don't care if people pull out in front of me as long as they get their speed up quick. like you said, if you don't have to slow down for the car that has pulled out in front of you then there is no reason to get angry.
I think you are over thinking this.
Just look in your blind spots before switching lanes and you should always be aware of the other cars around you while you are driving.

I think the bottom line is to make sure that you aren't just relying on your mirrors. You should also turn your head occasionally to make sure that all lanes are clear before moving. Many times drivers just use their mirrors. There is nothing wrong with using mirrors, but the phrase, ';objects in mirror are closer than they appear'; means that sometimes what we see in the mirror is not always true. Basically there are times when we may think that the mirror shows us a fixed image, but it may not always be what is correct. So to ensure we do not cut someone off, or cause an accident it is best to double check the mirrors, and turn your head in the process. You should also judge the distance between you and another vehicle. Don't just assume anything. Assuming is almost always the way to get you in an accident. The overall thing I'm stressing is to use your head and your mirrors.
No one can adjust your judgment and depth perception for you. You will have to learn to judge the right distance by the mirror on the car, whether it be convex or not. Your driver's side mirror should be a plain old flat mirror. A convex mirror, such as the one on the passenger side of most cars is the type mirror that says ';things are closer than they appear.
I have not seen your car, so I am not in a position to say you don't know what you are talking about as some of the other answers infer. I suppose it is quite possible that someone has put a convex mirror on the drivers side of your car, but it is very unlikely that it came from the factory like that.

I passed my G1 Exit Road test to day at Etobicoke centre road test .
my experience is : if you speak English not well first telling to ur examiner , '; Can you please speak slowly and when you ask me for turn please using your hands show me , Thanks ';
stop complete at the stop side , your head turn around check both side left and right make sure safe , go .
Stop at the stop sign( all time) , stop your car complete , turn around your head over 2 side of the road , this sign who come first go first .
Turn right at the stop sign : stop at the stop sign ,stop complete count 1-2-3 if no pedestrians crossing on cross way , move your car little up , watch for left side if no car coming turn ur wheel to right hand and make a turn .
Left turn left on intersection stop complete if on red and yellow light , If Green light go up 1/3 way stop look left right centre if no car coming make a left turn .
Changing positions :

Can you really drive?
Honestly,does any one out there really know how to drive.And if so perhaps you could tell me where and when the rules were ammended to quit using signals and asking permission to change lanes.Comman courtesy seems to be out the window here.Can you really drive?

If you should happen to take offense that I am changing lanes into your lane in front of you, and you should happen to object by speeding up in order to enforce some misguided (read ';wrong';) notion that I need your permission before proceeding, you can expect to find that I will not under any circumstances change my plan of changing lanes into the lane in front of you. You will find yourself in the undesirable position of rear-ending me, at which point your car will be totaled and you and all you own will belong to me. Not to mention that you will be forced to deal with your wife, if you have one, which will entail explaining why you wrecked the family car as a direct result of being a dick. Girlfriends do not appreciate this kind of behavior either. Wives and girlfriends look at it as childish, irresponsible and reckless, none of which is good for your sex life. Why would I ask your permission to change lanes? You do not own the road, and you do not have the authority to grant permission for lane changes. It is common courtesy to let other drivers know where I am going, so they can make appropriate plans.

When I put on my turn signal, it means I'm coming over and the person behind me should please either speed up and pass or let me over. I certainly don't cut in abruptly or very close like an aggressive driver, but I change lanes confidently and safely. Going back to construction zones, please feel free to tailgate me if you must, I plan on going the posted speed limit as they carry double fines and points which I really don't care to become involved with. Many work zones near Tampa, FL have lane shifts that require stradling a shoulder drop off and therefore unsafe to drive a 75,000# tractor trailer very fast on.
Conversely, if you signal to shift ahead of me or need to get ahead without driving like a complete jerk, I normally do what I can to leave enough space for people to pass. If you plan on passing a string of cars and then cutting in front of me from the right and narrowly between my front bumper and the rear end of the car in the slow lane.... I try to make sure that I close the gap and you have to pass on the left. Reasoning is that there are already cars passing me on the left, no need to set up a dual side impact collision right in front of me.

1. you have to drive for every-one else on the road and
2. just concentrate on what YOUare doing and keep at least a 3 second gap between you and the car in front,i.e ';Keep your eyes on the road and your hand's upon the wheel.';
I used to be a lot like you,getting pissed off when people ';cut me off';,until i realised they had a destination to get to also and would more than likely want to get there in one piece as well.
I would also like to add that i have been driving cars for over 25 years,and have recently just got my motor-cycle licence,what an eye opener that is !!!!!
At least when your in a car you have some protection around you,trying putting up with tail-gaters,people on the wrong side of the road,people that cut corners,4wd's towing caravans etc.....

Who should go first?
So if on the Freeway a car wants to change lanes to the right but a car is in that lane but 15 meters aft. The driver in car #1 signals to change lanes to the right but is also waiting for the motorist behind him to pass. BUT The motorist who was going to pass sees the turn signal and he slows down to let the car in. Yet car #1 is still waiting for the car to pass and right now they are both traveling at a constant speed. After about 10 seconds of this nonesense drive #1 finaly speeds up and changes lanes in front of the car even though he wanted to let it pass him first and get behind it because initially car #2 was going faster to begin with.
The driver of car #1 was me. Doesn't it suck how poor communication is on the road? Istead of motorist talking on their cell phones. Why not talk on 2 way radios so everyone on the road can talk to each other?
Don't you think we got it all wrong in how best to utilize technology? Both car and electronic communications devices.Who should go first?

Is it my axle?
I drive 96 Toyota Celica and whenever I am driving, the inside of the car sounds like a ';pod-racer'; my friend says. The noise becomes louder on the freeway, and even louder when I change lanes on the freeway. Is this problem my axle? How much would it cost to fix this problem (approx.)?Is it my axle?

i failed it becasue some guy was slowing down infront of me while i was focusing on trying to change lanes. i feel so miseralbe and stupid, how many people do you know who fail their road test. I need some cheering up. I have to wait 10 more days till i can take it again. it wouldnt be so bad if i did have to wait so longI just failed my Drivers Road test, cheer me up please?
Don't be so hard on yourself. Actually failing the first time relaxes you for the second chance. You'll feel much less anxious about the test because you'll know pretty much what to expect. Take your time. Driving 25 mph is a good thing. Remember when you stop at a street corner, before a cross walk, you should be able to see the entire crosswalk from the driver's seat. In other words, don't drive up to the crosswalk line. Stop far enough back so you can see the lines from the car easily. Be sure to use your blinkers when changing lanes. It's not the end. Only 10 days. Just try to be more focused. Practice with your mom or dad more. When I was in high school, my dad would let me drive to give me practice. This will make you laugh....
One day, I decided to back my dad's truck out of the garage. Instead of letting the brakes off easy and letting it back out, I slammed on the accelerator too much and went backwards really fast. This was before any driver's training or practice. I didn't ask my dad first. Just was a little too eager. The truck went back really fast I freaked out and slammed on the brakes. It was half way out, but I got so shook up, I stopped. I think my dad saw the whole thing because he came out laughing. My hands wouldn't stop shaking and nerves were out of whack, lol. You'll do fine. Just focus next time.
I failed twice over stupid stuff
Third time was the charm, and good thing cause I would have been sent back to take my permit test again after that.
Would it help you to know many people don't pass their first time out?
My son failed his maneuverability and wasn't even allowed to take his road test. The next week he came back, passed maneuverability and then failed the road test because he was too ';jerky'; with the car.
Like another answerer said, third time was the charm for him. Mainly because he had to learn what to expect and what the instructor wanted to see.
Remember, it happens to quite a few people. It's nothing to be embarrassed about. Try again in 10 days, relax, take it slow, you'll do fine.

My daughter is going through the same thing. She is 19 and going to start driving school tomorrow, even though she still has to go to DMV for final road test. She is so upset right now and has cried all day. I told her that she would eventually get it. So will you. Don't give up, try again. You do learn from your mistakes.
ummm.. i wont get my license until i'm about 17 because of my stupid birthday and school. i've been waiting since i was 3. i love driving, it's my life. and now i have to wait about another year.
Your not the first to fail or the last.
Don't make excuses for why you failed. Just try again until you pass. Its a very good thing to fail the first time, trust me MANY fail their first test.

you know what dont worry about it. Believe it or not my birthday is today and I went to take my test this morning and I also failed. I went into the manuverability course and it was pouring rain outside. It was so hard to see I knocked over the cone. Its miserable and it sucks especially since you waited so long but hold on and try again and you will get it.
I failed my first road test too. At least you made it out of the parking lot. I completely forgot to have my foot on the brake and then shift into gear. I spaced out for awhile and then he failed me :(. Oh well, I'll try again that's pretty much all we can do. I know how disappointed you feel, almost has if you're a total failure. See it this way first impressions are always awful.

wow way to live up to statistics that girls can't drive. it's best for everyone that you practice some more, i don't want you to run over my dog if he happens to cross that street, because you know, animals will be animals. in the mean time, just know that i pass my test on the first try with a perfect score.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Actually failing the first time relaxes you for the second chance. You'll feel much less anxious about the test because you'll know pretty much what to expect. Take your time. Driving 25 mph is a good thing. Remember when you stop at a street corner, before a cross walk, you should be able to see the entire crosswalk from the driver's seat. In other words, don't drive up to the crosswalk line. Stop far enough back so you can see the lines from the car easily. Be sure to use your blinkers when changing lanes. Be sure to use all your mirrors. You'll do fine the second time around.I just failed my Drivers Road test, cheer me up please?

It's not the end. Only 10 days. Just try to be more focused. Practice with your mom or dad more. When I was in high school, my dad would let me drive to give me practice. This will make you laugh....
One day, I decided to back my dad's truck out of the garage. Instead of letting the brakes off easy and letting it back out, I slammed on the accelerator too much and went backwards really fast. This was before any driver's training or practice. I didn't ask my dad first. Just was a little too eager. The truck went back really fast I freaked out and slammed on the brakes. It was half way out, but I got so shook up, I stopped. I think my dad saw the whole thing because he came out laughing. My hands wouldn't stop shaking and nerves were out of whack, lol. You'll do fine. Just focus next time.
I failed twice over stupid stuff
Third time was the charm, and good thing cause I would have been sent back to take my permit test again after that.
Would it help you to know many people don't pass their first time out?
My son failed his maneuverability and wasn't even allowed to take his road test. The next week he came back, passed maneuverability and then failed the road test because he was too ';jerky'; with the car.
Like another answerer said, third time was the charm for him. Mainly because he had to learn what to expect and what the instructor wanted to see.

I'm afraid of driving, please help?!?
Over the summer I had a near accident that would have been my fault so now i'm deathly afraid of changing lanes and of driving in general. I look in all my mirrors, behind me, and beside me in order to change lanes, but I'm still afraid of the blind spot and that there will be a car there that i'm going to crash into. How do I overcome this fear??I'm afraid of driving, please help?!?

Look over your shoulder before changing lanes and check your blind spot :)
