Do bowlers slide at the end of their approach anymore?

I used to bowl regularly in the 80s and remember sliding at the end of my approach, and it seems like that how it was done in the day. I have recently taken bowling back up, and I can't seem to slide at all. Watching other bowlers it seems likes no one slides. What's the deal? Did the shoes change? Did the lanes change? Is there anyway to remedy this? I feel like I am stopping short when I throw!

Thanks!Do bowlers slide at the end of their approach anymore?
Yes many things has changed. since the 80's

1 approaches has gone from wood to synthetic

2 many of the better shoes has interchangeable soles and heels so you can have a long slide or no slide at all

3 many lanes are no longer wood and also are syntheticDo bowlers slide at the end of their approach anymore?
I slide when I bowl. Some of it might depend on your shoes. Like, my shoes are smooth on the slide foot and have a leather tipped toe on the plant foot. Thats why when buying bowling shoes you'll see distinctions between right handed and left handed shoes. There are also a lot of shoes now with interchangable soles that help.

Most bowlers I see that at least use decent form do slide. Its actually kinda dangerous if you don't. I remember one time about 5 years ago I was out with friends and they wanted to bowl, and all my stuff was in my locker at the house I bowl in, so I was stuck with house equipment. The shoes they gave me stuck, and the first ball I threw I hurt my back. If you think about it, with all the momentum you're generatinig with a 15/16 lb ball, to stop suddenly puts a lot of pressure on your lower back. Sliding lets you slowly release that energy by sliding.

As for remedying your problem, its either the shoes or the approach. If it happens all the time its the shoes, since every lane isn't going to have an area on the approach thats ';sticky'; Furthermore, even the same lane shouldn't have a sticking problem from one day to the next. So, if it was just one time, it could be either. If its been more than once then its the shoes. You can try getting a brush and brushing the bottom of the shoe, and see if that helps at all. But, in all honesty, you're probably best off just getting yourself a new pair.
I think it does depend on your style of bowling. Me, being more of a cranker (a weak one at that), tends to plant my foot at the foul line and not slide, but strokers would still slide. Maybe there're more crankers nowadays?
