Driving fear?

im home from college and living with my parents this summer. they dont want me to drive on the interstate in our city because the traffic is literally murder. i go along with this because i have no desire to drive on these roads with aggressive drivers who swerve into your lane and don't let you merge or change lanes. i do drive within town with no problem but i have never gone on any big highway on my own. i thus have no experience driving long distances and i am convinced that if i ever try i will get into an accident.

im probably going to have to drive more someday, so how do i get over this anxiety? id prefer to avoid driving completely except for short distances, but this may not be realistic.Driving fear?
You are not alone. Many people have anxiety and even develop anxiety over driving on a highway. I had a panic attack on the expressway 5 years ago and it took me a good 2 and a half years before I was able to drive on the expressway again by myself. I was terrified of having another panic attack and crashing. Trust me, the only way you're going to get over your fear of driving on the highway is to face it. I suggest going on the highway with someone you trust at night when there are barely any cars. Get on and off, on and off, on and off...until you feel comfortable. Do this for a few nights and then ';graduate'; to a Sunday morning when there are a few more cars. When you feel comfortable with that, increase the amount of times with more and more traffic. BELIEVE me, you'll get the hang of it and you'll be a pro! You can do it! I know it seems sooo scary but you CAN do it! Have faith in yourself! Good luck!Driving fear?
You said it - it's not realistic not to drive. Just drive and little by little you'll overcome this fear. Stay with the traffic. Do NOT drive slower than everybody. You'll be OK.
i think probably everyone at one time or another had the same fear, you will over come it though, try going on the free way later at night when there isn't much traffic its easier to drive that way, sooner or later you,ll have to drive on real busy roads,is better to learn it now, than to wait, its not that bad,you just have to move along with the traffic, once you get use to it you wont mind it so much, good luck on it hope this helps.
Do you realize that something like 83% of all traffic accidents occur within 10 miles of the accident victim's home.

There are significant advantages to freeway driving. Everybody is going in the same direction at approximately the same speed. No one is entering traffic at 90 degree intersections and most places traffic traveling in different directions is seperated by more than a white stripe painted on the road.

I don't know if that will help you but it is the truth.
You know, interstate driving is not that bad. You just have to get used to it. I would recommend driving on the interstate during non-peak hours (late morning, early afternoon). That will give you some good experience. Find a mall or somewhere you want to go to that is a good distance. Just drive at least five over the speed limit, and move over if someone is coming up fast on your rear. For starters, just chill in the right lane. You'll get better over time.
