How safe is it to cycle around?

Obviously, bicycling is good for practical uses, not having to spend gas money, not having to find parking and pay for it, and it's relatively convenient.

I was wondering whether or not it would be safe to use my bicycle on roads that are around 45-50 miles per hour and not residential roads. I don't think there are sidewalks or bike paths, so I guess I would have to go with the cars.

So, my question is how safe is it if I don't block cars or change lanes without signalling? How safe is it to cycle around?
I have been a cyclist for about 20 years and have been up and down the East Coast 5 times. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. As the first guy said don't do it! First of all you must ride with traffic and this in itself is a very risky prospect. Even with a mirror on your bike you simply don't have a chance if some nut with a 3,500 lbs car decides to have fun at your expense. If you would like to find some good routes in your area try the adventure cyclist web site. How safe is it to cycle around?
Don't do it pal.... you'll die.
Don't want to freak you out, but I know someone who was killed on her bike. Sorry.
