What is so smart about the smart car?

Its either made by Chrysler or Mercedes Benz but they're tiny little cars made out of plastic I think. Somebody please tell me what is so smart about a car that only gets 40 mpg (crap for how small it is). Acclerates like crap, would probably kill you instantly if you were in a wreck, (what is their to protect you?). Is highly likely to get run over by a car changing lanes. And has no room for more than two passengers or any groceries. I keep seeing one of these things putting up and down my street, what the heck is so intelligent about it?What is so smart about the smart car?
To tell you the truth, I can't figure ANYTHING to be so ';Smart'; about it either. May I also add the PRICE to the equation? Since it's obvious intent through its design is ECONOMY, I can think of LOTS of cars that are much less expensive. Not to mention its IMPRACTICALITY, due to having differently sized wheels both front and rear make tire rotations impossible when servicing, as well as the inconvience of having to go hunting for a fueling station that sells DIESEL, to fuel its three cylinders of turbodiesel power. My personal favourite vehicle is a Ford Excursion, which would CRUSH one of those in an instant!!! With all that said, I can't think of anything so ';Smart'; about it myself. What is so smart about the smart car?
Ford Girl, I bet you feel ';smart'; NOW paying $100/week to fill up your excursion that gets 14 mpg, i bet you have nightmares everytime you go to the gas station, hahahahahahaha.

tells you where to go
Is smart, because makes Chrysler Daimler lots of f@#$%g money, out of dumb people that pays the ridiculous prices they sell it for.
The name is an acronym. Swatch Mercedes ART.

You also have to realize that Smarts are designed for driving circumstances far different than the majority of American drivers encounter. I think the car was a pretty good match for European urban driving, but I can't fathom why anyone thought it would be a good idea to import it to the US.

To be fair, I seem to remember that Smarts have a pretty robust safety frame made of steel or aluminum alloy to meet minimum crash requirements.

And are you saying that all small cars are necessarily a bad idea since you run the risk of getting run over?

Granted, there are a dozen better choices in the subcompact segment.
They do fairly well in crash testing, they use the crumple zone of the cars that hit them to dissipate energy. And you can park it anywhere (not really a problem in America).
