How many miles before your destination do you start changing lanes right?

Say you have 4 lanes to go in pretty hard core traffic. I was told 1 mile? But, at that rate I usually miss my exit because idiots don't let me in.How many miles before your destination do you start changing lanes right?
It depends, are you signalling or not, if you signal first idiots will cut you off. If a mile is not enough, experiment by increasing distance incrementally until your are usually successful in making your exit. How many miles before your destination do you start changing lanes right?
I get in the right lane as early as possible and stay there, unless I'm behind someone driving ridiculously slow. I pretty much get in the right lane as soon as I can.
You should be able to slip in with a mile left. Otherwise, if traffic appears heavy just move over sooner.
You should get in the lane you will exit from at least 2-3 miles before in case there are problems on the road or an accident that you can't see right away. So what if you have to drive a little slower - better safe then sorry!
You should have at least three car lengths between you and car behind in the lane you are changing to.

You should began moving towards the exit lane as soon as you can, as long as you don't get into a ';Must Turn Right'; lane at an exit. If you do, the worst thing that happens is you exit too soon. You can always use the feeder or reenter the expressway.

Even one mile may not be enough to do this in some traffic. Unfortunately other drivers are usually not polite and pay no heed to turn signals.
like a mile unless someone is slow in front of me. i will get home if i have to speed. lol-lol thanx Kat if its night? take and push that button on your mirror in the middle of your windshield. those jerks will back off as they cannot see. smiles.
One mile is the norm but as I tell my wife don't Waite until the last mile it would be safer to get over long before your time. Good Luck and God Bless
a mile to 1/2 mile before i need to get off!!
Try 2 miles then
My husband makes fun of me for this but I try to stay in the lane I need to be in from the start even if it's 20 miles until I get to where I'm going. If I can't be for any reason (ending of on/off lanes for example), I stay in the #2 and the next opportunity I have, I move over. I know I end up in traffic more often because of this but I just don't trust that I will get the opening I need or time I need to get over that many lanes in a short distance. My husband will be out in the fast lane and move over when he sees the 1/4 mile sign! Somehow it works for him. I'm just not that way I guess.
I always like to stay within the two lanes closest to the exit. Change whenever you can if you have seen that traffic gets bad.
Seems like a lot of people use 6 feet.
DO WHAT I DO, DONT MOVE OUT THE LANE THAT YOU GOING TO EXIT
Understandable...

Two weeks ago, my husband and I were pulled over because he didn't stay in the lane he turned into. The cop said you have to stay in it for 100 yards. I personally think that's retarded.

No we didn't get a ticket, I think the cop was freakin bored, nothing else to do but to harass ...
Then you are one of those dufuses that slows up traffic. I speed all the way down the fast lane, pull my hand brake, cut across two lanes up on two wheels, and then do a J-turn onto the shoulder of the off ramp. Then I speed down the shoulder and grass with a fake siren and lights on. At least I get to work on time. I don't care about the other bozos.
